Start with the essentials

Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. A NOAA Weather Radio with tone alerts can provide local weather updates. Test reception and alert settings before you need them.

Tools and personal protection

Choose respiratory protection for the actual hazard and follow its instructions. A particulate respirator does not protect against carbon monoxide or other gases.

Try it with the cans in your food supply. Choose a grip and turning action you can use comfortably.

Washing and everyday needs

Clothing and a place to rest

Pack suitable layers, dry socks, and shoes you can walk in. Use clothing you already own where possible.

Documents and communication

Keep a sensible amount with your household supplies in case electronic payments are unavailable.

Personalize for your household

Ask your pharmacist or clinician about arranging at least a week of prescription medicines and a storage plan for anything that needs refrigeration. Keep current prescription information with your supplies.

Review your usual over-the-counter supplies and expiration dates with a pharmacist. Choose medicines for the people who will use them; keep original labels.

Plan suitable batteries, chargers, mobility aids, and support contacts around daily needs. An ordinary power station listing is not medical-backup certification.

For formula-fed infants, single-serving ready-to-feed formula is the safest emergency option. Plan feeding and cleaning supplies for your own child, with safe water and soap. Do not use equipment you cannot clean safely.
