Read the food label before filling the emergency cupboard

Choose food the people in your household can safely eat. Check every recipe in an assortment, including any substitutions.

Check every recipe in a mixed pack

A bucket can contain meals with very different ingredients. Read the label information for each recipe and check whether substitutions are allowed. Choose meals that suit your household’s allergies and dietary needs.

Read beyond the front of the package

The nine major food allergens are milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. Read the ingredient list and allergen information for the exact package. Account for any other ingredients you need to avoid; meat-free or gluten-free alone does not settle every dietary need.

Keep labels when you repack food

Retain ingredient, allergen, preparation, date, and storage information when moving food into a kit. Recipes can change, and different sizes or varieties may contain different ingredients. Check again when you replace a familiar product.

Plan meals your household can use

Compare familiar pantry foods with specialty pouches. Think about portions, texture, preparation water, and utensils as well as ingredients. For individual dietary restrictions, follow your care team’s advice and the current package information.
